Bear Lake Campout September 27-29

Picture-perfect early fall weather greeted the scouts at our campout at Bear Lake, just northeast of Wabeno.

The patrols made good use of the empty hike-in sites on the peninsula, setting up camp and securing ample room for games of capture the flag as well. The weekend featured fishing, food, and fun. Despite some windy weather, canoes were on the water, including for the epic Great Canoe Relay. In the Scout competition, it was the Falcons besting the Rangers/Scorpions/Cobras. In the Scout-Adult rubber match, the Scorpions/Cobras edged out the team of SPL+ASM. Although fishing was slow with the wind, the Moonlight Crawfish Hunt yielded a steady supply.

See you at the next campout!

Back from the Porkies

The backpacking crew has returned safe and sound from the Porcupine Mountains. We spent several great days exploring this wild and untamed place, trekking on challenging and hilly terrain and setting up camp in some of the remote and scenic campsites throughout the wilderness.

Backpacking Crew and Hiking MB Outing

A perfect summer day and the wild woods of Bairds Creek awaited hikers from Troop 1468 on Sunday, August 18. Ten miles covered on winding and hilly trails, and a great trail lunch eaten. The menu included "Mud," "Rodman Dam Hydro Sludge," "Sunny Daze Rice," and some homemade, home-dehydrated spaghetti. The crew also discovered that they do not like Spam (sorry Mr. Bettis!)

Next stop...The Porcupine Mountains!
Ready to go

Up the hill and down the hill

Sylvania 2013

The scouts and their parents had their yearly adventure to Sylvania in July.  There were a lot of fish caught, cooked and eaten.  The weather was cool and damp, but didn't dampen everyone's spirits.  A scout is prepared!!!!

The Canoe race to the finish line heading home - the Haas boys won the race.

Bear Paw June 16 thru 22, 2013

Another fun year for the Scouts at Bear Paw.  There were 4 scouts who received the "Order of the Arrow" - Joel Haas, Cole Malke, William Voelker and Cody Bettis.

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It uses American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting. The society was created by E. Urner Goodman, with the assistance of Carroll A. Edson, in 1915 as a means of reinforcing the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. The goal was to establish these as lifelong guidelines, and to encourage continued participation in Scouting and camping. Influenced in part by camp traditions, and Indian folklore, the OA uses "safeguarded" symbols, handshakes, and ceremonies to impart a sense of community.

Hiking Merit Badge & Backpacking Patrol

Temperatures near 90 degrees and humidity to match couldn't deter the intrepid backpack patrol yesterday on the Machickanee Trails. Only one month to go until the Porkies!
